Our strength lies in the combined expertise in the fields of energy, environmental law, power generation and distribution, as well as experience on all administrative law aspects, and planning development for various sectors, including residential development, ecotourism and transportation projects such as railway, ports and airport facilities.
ICAZA, GONZALEZ-RUIZ & ALEMAN have demonstrated technical expertise in various deals involving complex environmental and commercial issues related to the idiosyncratic geographical characteristics of Panama, such as hydrographic, preservation and maintenance, and transport issues. We often work in conjunction to our specialists in the areas of Public and Administrative Law, or Finance and Banking, as appropriate.
Among our firm major accomplishments we can list:
- Tropical Resort International: Advice in their development of an Eco-Resort Hotel and facilities complex in a negotiation that involved a concession of 100 hectares of preservation-graded public land and an investment of US$ 30,000,000.00. This agreement that was unusual as it involved land of high bio-diversity, at the Gamboa forest, that forms part of the Panama Canal watershed, and therefore a sensitive area, subject to special regulations defined by the Interoceanic Region Authority.
- Booz Allen & Hamilton: Advice in a study (Master Plan) for the Use, Preservation and Development of the Canal Area.
- UN promoted project: Participation in the Legal Study and Implementation of the law establishing the Interoceanic Region Authority. This project included a detailed revision of the laws and drafting of all necessary regulations for the leasing, concessions and sales of the prescribed land, as well as legal aspects relating to planning, engineering, architecture and fiscal issues.
- Shell Standard Oil: Securing the concession of various Petroleum Free Zones in ports and at the Tocumen International Airport.
- Alireza Mobil Terminals S.A.: (a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil): We negotiated the contracts required to establish a Petroleum Free Zone, including a tank farm and the petroleum terminal at the Rodman Piers. In this occasion we worked together with our Free Trade Zones team.
- IRHE: (formerly state-owned Electricity provider): Our participation in the privatization by private sale of this company is another example of our expertise|
- Bank of Boston: Advice on the financing of a public bid winner for the construction of an electricity plant, using a combination of asset- backed and accounts receivables finance.
