ABOUT THE SECTOR

Since 1996, when Panama joined the World Trade Organization, it updated its consumer protection regulations, adopted antitrust rules, and privatized its telephone and electricity utilities. Since then, consumer and user protection regulations have been introduced in different areas (e.g. banking, insurance, securities, regulated activities, etc.) and the Consumer Protection and Antitrust Authority, the Public Services Regulatory Entity, the Superintendency of Banks, the Superintendency of Insurance and the Superintendency of the Securities Market have been created and given powers in this area.
